Cirque du Soleil – Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour
This May, the concert is coming to Gainesville, but it might not be the one you’re thinking of.
The famous Cirque du Soleil entertainment company and the Estate of Michael Jackson are combining their talents to showcase Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. The show has been one of the top 10 grossing performances of all time since its premiere in Montreal in October 2011. From detailed costumes to awe-inspiring music, to in-depth scenes and the elaborate set, every aspect of the show is set to impress.
A show dedicated to the legacy of Michael Jackson would not be complete without incredible music.
“Our goal is not to simply cover Michael Jackson, but to take his music to a whole new level,” says Director Jamie King.
This was achieved by remixing Michael Jackson’s classics to create something fresh, while still upholding his artistry. If the audience listens closely, they may recognize the snapping of Michael Jackson’s fingers or the voice of Naomi Campbell mixed into some of the songs.
Throughout the show, audiences will notice subtle references to Michael Jackson’s iconic looks, such as his zipper-clad jacket from Beat It and his corseted wrist in Black or White. Costume Designer Zaldy Goco, who also designed costumes for Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT Tour, made it a goal not to replicate Michael Jackson’s iconic looks but rather pay tribute to them.
“The prospect of working on this show was not so much a second chance with regard to THIS IS IT as much as an opportunity to honor Michael and keep his legacy alive with new ideas,” Goco said.
With over 250 costumes, extravagant pieces with LED technology, 3D printing and Swarovski crystals, audiences are sure to be amazed.
Set and Props
Michael Jackson’s legacy can even be found in the set and props of the show.
“In this case, the set design takes on a whole new meaning,” said Set Designer Mark Fisher. “Its role is to fill the shadows…and to evoke the artist’s presence.”
Audience members can be on the lookout for giant eight-foot long shoes referencing Michael Jackson’s penny loafers, a six-foot tall glove and video projections of his past performances.
The performance is sure to be breathtaking, combining the tantalizing intensity of Cirque du Soleil with the inspiration set forth by Michael Jackson’s life works. The show will be set in a rock concert format and accompanied by dancers, musicians and acrobats from across the world.
Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour will take place on Tuesday, May 13, and Wednesday, May 14, at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Tickets are available at www.cirquedusoleil.com/MichaelJackson and www.Ticketmaster.com; tickets can also be purchased by calling 1-800-745-3000.
